Zulu Woman Shaka, who became the chief of the tiny Zulu group in 1818, forged the Zulu nation into the mightiest empire in Southern Africa. Most Zulu married women wear wide, disk-like headdresses. Some of the women also have large round earrings that emulate the once common practice of wearing earplugs.
